Because You Love to Hate Me: 13 Tales of Villainy

368 Pages
My Rating – 3* – 5*
‘Leave it to the heroes to save the world–villains just want to rule the world.

In this unique YA anthology, thirteen acclaimed, bestselling authors team up with thirteen influential BookTubers to reimagine fairy tales from the oft-misunderstood villains’ points of view.

These fractured, unconventional spins on classics like “Medusa,” Sherlock Holmes, and “Jack and the Beanstalk” provide a behind-the-curtain look at villains’ acts of vengeance, defiance, and rage–and the pain, heartbreak, and sorrow that spurned them on. No fairy tale will ever seem quite the same again!’

No thank you. ☹️
Sadly this was a big nope for me, I wanted it to be good I really did but well… it wasn’t
It’s a shame considering this was the first book of short stories I have picked up since I was at school, which was a while ago.
Oh well, better look next time right? ?

The thing that interested me most about this book were two things – the fact that is was a collaboration between YA authors and some very influential booktubers and the fact that it was a whole book based on Villains?!?!?! What’s not to like, right?

️  The Blood of Imuriv by Renee Ahdieh –
Lots of info, not much else?
Writing was interesting I guess I just wanted more.

 Jack by Amerrie –
A little bit better, clever twist on Jack and the Beanstalk, quite like a fairy tale retelling.

️  Gwen and Art and Lance by Soman Chainani –
Love the format not much else.
Confused by the villain bit?
Quite a fan of Merlin (TV show) but I didn’t really enjoy this story very much?

Shirley and Jim by Susan Dennard –
This one I enjoyed!!
I love Sherlock Holmes (TV Shows and Movies) and I found the gender swap of Sherlock to be interesting, the only downside for me is that this is a book about villains and although Jim is mentioned in this often the book is overall about Shirley Holmes.

️  The Blessing of Little Wants by Sarah Enni –
I don’t really remember much about this one…
Clearly I enjoyed it…..

The Sea Witch by Marissa Meyer –
Loved this one, especially as it’s a retelling of the Little Mermaid based around the sea witch.
The only fault I have with this one was that I wish it was longer

️  Medusa by Cindy Pon –
This was the first thing I’ve read that Cindy has written, I thought it was okay, I don’t know much about Medusa so I don’t have a ton of things to compare it too? But yeah it was okay.

Death Knell by Victoria Schwab –
This was another one I loved, there is just something about Schwab’s writing that I find so addictive.
As always the queen delivers.

️  Marigold by Samatha Shannon –
I feel a bit bad because I skim read this one because I didn’t find it that interesting, think it was about faes? Maybe.

You, You, It’s All About You by Adam Silvera –
This one was also okay! I like his characters in this, Amanda was really interesting, I wouldn’t mind it actually being a story.

️  Indigo and Shade by April Genevieve Tucholke –
I love Gaston but not this story, too predictable even for me.

 Sera by Nicola Yoon –
This one was another one that was okay….

Overall, if you haven’t already figured it out I wasn’t blown away by this anthology of short stories, there were more that I didn’t enjoy than I enjoyed which is always a shame. I wanted this to be good, I really did but I think most of it fell short and unmemorable.

Life’s too short to read books that are just okay!!! ✌️

Thank you to May  @ Forever and Everly for buddy reading this with me! ❤️
It was fun to winge about the bad stories together!
