Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake.
The first book in the Three Dark Crown series.
My rating – 4* – 5*
‘When kingdom come, there will be one.
In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.
The last queen standing gets the crown. ‘
however good this book was towards the end that doesn’t make up for how slow and how much it dragged for me in the beginning but i did enjoy this book overall 🙂
do i have a favourite queen?
of course, all hail queen katharine 😉
she is my precious cinnamon roll and i can totally see her kicking major ass in the next book (or at least i hope so). she is strong willed and determined even though she doesn’t show much to do with her “gift” i still believe in her!
arisone i don’t mind very much, she also has a ‘weak gift’, while find arisone rather boring i love her best friend Jules, she is full of such life and is so interesting and funny and i really hope we see more of her in the next book.
then there is mirabella who is said to be the strongest of the queens, i find her super mysterious and i really hope we find out more about her in the next book as i’m pretty sure she has some things up her sleeve.
although the main character are awesome there are also some side character (Jules, Joseph, billy) who i love and I feel like play a great part in the story. i love how Kendare Blake weaves all the characters together and connects them 🙂
it did take me a while to get used to the writing and the pace of the story as the first I’d say 30-40% I did find it a bit boring and difficult to get into but I had heard such good reviews on the book so I knew I had to continue as it was going to get better.
if you are a lover of ya fantasy with a slow start but a build up towards the end with complex word building and interesting characters then this book is for you!
Thank you to Danielle @ the blonde likes books for buddy reading this with me! ❤️
