‘Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship.

Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.’

I went into this book with an open mind – this was one of these books where I felt like I had too, it has such mixed reviews with my GR friends with half of them loving it and the other half either DNFing or rating it 1-2 stars. I think I’m somewhere in the middle maybe? It was in no way a great book but I can’t say   it was a bad book either, it was just an okay book.

retelling of fairytales are one of my favourite sort of books to read so i couldn’t help being a little bit excited when I started reading it because well, I love reading them and the fact it was about the red queen could be interesting and exciting to read.

sadly, this book wasn’t all that great?
I mean there were many bits of this book that I enjoyed but I found the pace rather slow and the whole story in general a bit predictable.

I love jest, he was such a fun character and I was rooting for him so much, because of that i found myself screaming at Catherine wanting her to make up her mind, either rebel or do what you parents want, she kept changing her mind it was so infuriating!!! 🙁

I think the last maybe 60% – 70% of the book was when I got more invested in the story and the characters and started to enjoy it even more.

when we first meet Catherine it was hard to imagine this average girl who likes to bake as the red queen but as the story progressed I has predicted what was going to happen to turn our little baker into the red queen and my predication was 100% correct.

although this book did have some redeeming qualities in my eyes overall I did find it boring at parts and a bit too predictable that I had guessed most of it before it had happened and I don’t really enjoy that in my books that much, I like a bit of suspense.

Thank you to Carrie @ Sweet Cherry 69 for buddy reading this with me! ❤️
