Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past. ‘

“The only rule that counted was to not get caught.”

This book really surprised me.

I’m not sure what I expected when opening this book but I was incredibly surprised by just how much I ended up enjoying this book, I think if you are a fan of the six of crows you may end up liking this book. I think I have found one of my favourite reads of 2017, I was just blown away by how much I liked this book.

This is my first book by Lisa Maxwell and I can assure you that it won’t be my last. Yes, this book was a slow burn but I was hooked into the story pretty quickly, it got to a point where I didn’t want to put this book down when I eventually found time to sit and read this.

It’s full of badass character, manipulation, magic, betrayal and on top of those exciting things it also happens to have an amazing plot full of twists, a wonderful writing style and some of the best character’s I’ve read in a fantasy book for a while.

“But then, liars do make the best magicians, and he happened to be exceptional.”

Esta is our main character and she is amazing, I found her cunning and sarcastic, brave and kind. SO stubborn but I found her easily relatable and I was rooting for her all throughout this book for things to go okay for her.

I also love Harte our magician, he was so sneaky and I just loved him – the banter between him and Esta was also hilarious and I loved anything that they ended up together.

There is also a big twist at the end which I won’t get into but I didn’t see it coming what so ever, I was blown away from it actually and that’s what I think makes a good book if the plot twist can make you do that.

The magic side of it was okay but it was mostly the characters that made me want to carry on this book, I wanted to know what was happening to each and every one of them.

I believe this is a standalone but I hope it isn’t because that ending had me wanting, no needing to know more!! I highly recommend this to anyone, especially those who have been hesitant on picking it up! 😀

Thank you to angelica @ the book cover girls for buddy reading this with me ❤️
