Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab
The Second book in the Monsters of Verity duology
My Rating – 5*/5*
‘THE WORLD IS BREAKING. AND SO ARE THEY.
KATE HARKER isn’t afraid of monsters. She hunts them. And she’s good at it.
AUGUST FLYNN once yearned to be human. He has a part to play. And he will play it, no matter the cost.
THE WAR HAS BEGUN.
THE MONSTERS ARE WINNING.
Kate will have to return to Verity. August will have to let her back in. And a new monster is waiting—one that feeds on chaos and brings out its victims’ inner demons.
Which will be harder to conquer: the monsters they face, or the monsters within?’
“There were two kinds of monsters, the kind that hunted the streets and the kind that lived in your head. She could fight the first, but the second was more dangerous. It was always, always, always a step ahead.”
Dark, Twisty and perfect
I have no idea why it took me so long to pick up this book, but I am so glad that I finally did it! ?
My only issue now is that I want there to be another book, sadly this book is only a duology so I’ve had to say goodbye to August and Kate; until a reread of course!
As always Schwab’s writing is just beautiful and I was gripped within the first chapters, my only issue with this book is that I felt the last 50 chapters were a little rushed, I just wanted a little more, but this book was beautiful and heart breaking, it was a brilliant sequel – I loved it a lot.
This book takes place six months after This Savage Song and I was surprised by how different it was, for starters Kate wasn’t in Verity, she was in Prosperity and she had made a new group of “friends”, I use that term loosely as although they are her friends Kate always puts a barrier up between herself and others. Of course, then there is August who is still in Verity and he has done a complete 180 turn and isn’t like the old August in the first book, of course we all know why he has changed but I still miss the old August ☹
I love the fact that the books are once again told by August and Kate’s perspective but also we had chapters there belong so Sloan with a bit of Alice as well, then there are also the chapters belonging to the new monster!
August and Kate I loved as much as I did in the first book, the tables actually turned as in the first book I didn’t like Kate as much as I liked August but after reading this book I can easily say I love them both. It killed me waiting for them to meet up, I was so happy when they finally did even though their reunion wasn’t quite how I imagined it to be.
The big twist which I didn’t really see coming like – at all really shocked me. I was actually buddy reading this with Hannah and I messaged her straight away all like “OMG I JUST FINISHED, OMG!!!” because I was so shocked by the last few pages and I needed someone to talk to straight away!!
Overall, this book was a really enjoyable read and although I’d love for there to be another book I was still happy with the ending ?
